David Burch: A Journey from Sociology to Abstract Expressionism

David Burch’s artistic journey is as intriguing as his vibrant and expressive paintings. Born and raised in Alberta, Canada, Burch’s story takes unexpected turns, leading him from a career in sociology to becoming an abstract expressionist painter. In 1967, at the age of 23, Burch earned his second Degree, First Class Honours in Sociology, from the University of Calgary. Subsequently, he packed his bags and ventured eastward to Toronto, where he spent 28 years of his life. Little did he know that this move would mark the beginning of his transformation into an art collector and later, a seasoned painter.

Burch’s art, like his journey, is multifaceted and intriguing. One of his notable works, “DOORS,” offers a glimpse into his abstract exploration. Created about 12 years ago, “DOORS” marks Burch’s shift from abstract landscapes to purely abstract expressions. It’s a canvas that delves into the depths of color and form, particularly focusing on the color red. In Burch’s own words, the painting is a “colourfield exploration,” inviting viewers to immerse themselves in the intensity and drama of the red hues.

“DOORS” is not just a painting; it’s an experience. The contrast between the dark shapes, painted in deep purple, and the splash of white against the red background, draws the viewer’s attention squarely to the vibrant redness of the canvas. The titular “doors” serve as portals, guiding the viewer into the rich tapestry of red that dominates the artwork. It’s a visual journey, inviting exploration and introspection.

Burch’s approach to abstract expressionism is both bold and subtle. While his use of color is striking, there’s a nuanced layering that adds depth and complexity to his work. Each brushstroke is deliberate, each color choice intentional. In “DOORS,” Burch balances intensity with restraint, creating a composition that is at once dynamic and harmonious.

What sets Burch apart as an artist is his ability to evoke emotion through abstraction. While his paintings may not depict recognizable subjects, they resonate on a visceral level. “DOORS,” for example, elicits a sense of awe and curiosity, inviting viewers to lose themselves in its depths. It’s a testament to Burch’s skill that he can communicate so powerfully without relying on representational imagery.

Throughout his career, Burch has continued to push the boundaries of abstract expressionism. His body of work is diverse, ranging from bold, energetic pieces to more subdued, contemplative ones. Yet, regardless of the style or subject matter, there’s a consistent thread that runs through his art—the ability to capture the essence of human experience through color and form.

In essence, David Burch is more than just a painter; he’s a storyteller. Each canvas is a chapter in his ongoing narrative, inviting viewers to join him on a journey of exploration and discovery. And much like life itself, his art is full of surprises, challenges, and moments of profound beauty.
