Another May auction season in New York has come to an end. Nearly $1.4 billion worth of art was sold in a week after two weeks of blockbuster art fairs in New York, with major sales held by Christie’s, Sotheby’s and Phillips.
Despite concerns about a tepid art market and cyberattacks on Christie’s website, the auction’s results were mixed, but not entirely negative. While the total was down from the $1.8 billion reached in May 2023, sales were broadly within their expectations, with Andy Warhol, Georgia O’Keeffe and Claude Works by several blue-chip masters, such as Claude Monet, showed solidity at auction. The standout lot of this auction season is Leonora Carrington’s Dagobert’s interference (1945) sold for $28.5 million at Sotheby’s Modern Art Evening Sale, becoming the most expensive work ever sold by a British-born female artist. The transaction price including commissions was $10 million higher than the work’s high estimate of $18 million, and far exceeded the artist’s previous auction record of $3.26 million set at Sotheby’s in 2022. The late American artist Ana Mendieta set two new auction records at Christie’s Rosa de la Cruz Collection Evening Sale. First is the opening lot, Silueta Mexico Factory (1973-77), sold for $277,200, well above its estimate of $50,000-70,000. Then, after four batches, Untitled (Sand Girl Series) The sale price was $567,025, exceeding its high estimate of $500,000.
The latter works, made from sand and adhesive on plastic foam, are typical of Mendieta’s engagement with the body and the natural world.
