    “California Soul” singer turns 81 — The Hollywood Reporter

    Marina Shaw, the legendary soul and jazz singer recognized for her hit tune “California Soul,” has died. She is 81 years previous.

    Shaw’s daughter, Marla Bradshaw, shared information of her loss of life in a video posted on Fb on Friday. The reason for her loss of life is unclear.

    “It’s with a really heavy coronary heart that I announce for myself and my household that our beloved mom, the one that you love icon and artist, Marlena Shaw, handed away at 12:03 as we speak,” Bradshaw mentioned. “She was at peace. . We had been at peace. … She went to hearken to a few of her favourite songs.”

    She added: “I simply needed to thank everybody for following her web page. Thanks for being part of her life. Particularly these three years, it made her so completely satisfied.”

    Born on September 22, 1939 in New Rochelle, New York, Shaw started her musical profession within the Sixties and influenced quite a lot of musical genres, together with jazz, soul, disco and R&B. The singer has launched a complete of 17 albums with eight totally different document labels throughout her profession.

    Shaw turned common within the Sixties when Chess Data seen her.She launched the albums beneath the music label’s subsidiary Cadet Data Take it out from totally different luggage (1967) and spice of life (1969), the latter of which included the hits “California Soul” and “Girl of the Ghetto.”

    Ashford & Simpson’s “California Soul” has since been sampled by a number of different artists, together with Gang Starr, Stereo MC’s, DJ Shadow and Diplo.

    Shaw moved to Blue Be aware Data in 1972 and launched various albums beneath the label, together with Marina, from the depths of my soul and Only a matter of time.She was later launched candy starting Owned by Columbia Data in 1977.

    Verve Data, which partnered with Shaw in 1987, mentioned in a press release: “We’re saddened by the passing of Marlena Shaw, a beautiful singer whose ‘California Soul’ stays as common as ever and whose album ‘It Is Love”: Recorded stay on Vine St. in 1987 and helped relaunch the Verve label.”
