Frieze Sculpture will return to London’s Regent’s Park this autumn, showcasing the work of 22 leading artists, including Leonora Carrington, Theaster Gates and Yoshitomo Nara. The exhibition will be held from September 18 to October 27, in conjunction with the Frieze London art fair and the Frieze Masters art exhibition, which will be held from October 9 to 13. Fatoş Üstek, curator of Frieze Sculpture, will return to curate the event.
“This year’s selection takes our ambitions a step further, featuring bold and experimental artistic approaches,” Üstek said in a statement. “It also provides a platform for playful encounters, socially and environmentally aware themes, and public spaces. The field expands the conceptual and spiritual practice of sculpture to create a place.”
While the 2024 artist lineup will be similar to 2023, upcoming exhibitions will feature more female and non-binary artists, including Carrington, Ashwini Bhat, Zanele Muholi, Anna Boghiguian, Juliana Cerqueira Leite, Theresa Chromati, Céline Condorelli, Inchi Avina, Frances Goodman, Libby Heaney, Nika Nilova, Fani Palali, Zizbo Boswa and Kirstin Ropes Tov. The 14 artists will display their work along the tree-lined pathways of Regent’s Park, alongside Gates, Nara, Nathan Coley, FOS, Albano Hernandez, Mohamed Al Hamed Ibrahim, Hans Josephson and Woody de Othello.
Typically Frieze Sculpture is a platform for ambitious cutting-edge sculpture projects, and this year 18 of the 27 works will be new. These include Carrington’s 2011 bronze sculpture, dancer, Created in the year of the Surrealist artist’s death. The piece features an anthropomorphic bird with three eyes and four arms.
Frieze Sculpture will also form a central part of London Sculpture Week, taking place for the first time in 2022. Elsewhere, city-wide celebrations will include art tours, performances and events such as Fourth Plinth, Urban Sculpture and Route workshops.
