The “Van Gogh in Auvers-sur-Oise” exhibition held by the Musée d’Orsay set a “historical record” of 793,556 visitors. The exhibition has attracted an average of 7,181 visitors per day in the 108 days since its opening on October 3, according to a museum announcement.

The exhibition explores Van Gogh’s final months in a small town near Paris before his suicide in 1890 at the age of 37.Before his untimely death, Van Gogh painted 74 paintings in just 70 days, including Dr. Paul Gachet, Church of Auvers-sur-Oiseand Cornfield with crows.

In addition to these iconic paintings, the museum has used virtual reality headsets to create an immersive experience that puts viewers right inside the works. A dialogue with Van Gogh is created through the interactive part of artificial intelligence animation.

This is a milestone for the museum, with the largest number of visitors since its opening in 1986. The number of visitors to the Van Gogh exhibition is ahead of the 2022 exhibition “Edward Munch”. A Poem of Life, Love and Death” brought 724,414 visitors, and the 2018 exhibition “Picasso. Blue and Pink” attracted 670,667 visitors.

Given the success of the Van Gogh exhibition, the Musée d’Orsay plans to create an immersive experience around the upcoming exhibition “Paris 1874: Inventing Impressionism”, which will open on March 26.
