Stephen Von Mason’s artistic path took root in his childhood in South Bend, Indiana. Born in 1954, he was drawn to creativity from an early age, spending hours sketching rodeo riders and football players. These energetic subjects fueled his passion for capturing movement and individuality, shaping his artistic identity. By the time he reached high school, his commitment to art had strengthened, setting him on the path to a professional career.
Following graduation, Stephen sought formal training to refine his skills. He enrolled at the John Heron School of Art in Indianapolis, specializing in printmaking and earning his BFA. Immersed in an environment that fostered technical growth, he built a strong foundation in his craft. However, his artistic ambitions pushed him further. Seeking deeper expertise, he headed west and applied to the San Francisco Institute of Art. Awarded a scholarship, he pursued his MFA in printmaking, a transformative milestone in his evolution as an artist.
‘Forever Remembered: Honoring the Life of Aaliyah Dana Haughton’ – Oil on Canvas, 24 X 30″, 2024

In his latest work, Forever Remembered: Honoring the Life of Aaliyah Dana Haughton, Stephen Von Mason delivers a powerful tribute to the late singer. Through oil on canvas, he captures Aaliyah’s elegance, confidence, and enduring presence.
The portrait is simple yet impactful. Aaliyah’s gaze is direct and soulful, reflecting the quiet strength that defined her. Von Mason’s careful rendering of her smooth complexion and poised expression conveys a sense of timelessness. The crisp white garment draped over her contrasts beautifully with her warm skin tones, while her bold earrings add a subtle nod to her signature style.
Von Mason’s use of contrast plays a crucial role in the painting’s emotional depth. The background is a deep black, making Aaliyah’s figure glow against it, almost as if she’s illuminated from within. This contrast heightens the painting’s ethereal quality, reinforcing the sense that Aaliyah’s influence remains present and undiminished.
The artist’s brushwork is deliberate yet restrained. Each stroke contributes to a refined realism that avoids unnecessary embellishment. The smooth blending of colors enhances the softness of Aaliyah’s features, while subtle shading around her eyes and lips brings her expression to life. Rather than imposing dramatic effects, Von Mason allows Aaliyah’s presence to command attention naturally.
What makes this piece different is its quiet reverence. There are no grand symbols or overt storytelling elements—just Aaliyah, captured in a way that allows her spirit to shine through. Von Mason’s approach respects her legacy without overstatement, ensuring that the painting remains a sincere tribute rather than a spectacle.
Beyond its technical execution, Forever Remembered stands as an emotional homage. It invites viewers to pause and reflect, not just on Aaliyah’s talent but on the impact she left behind. The piece is less about nostalgia and more about recognition—of a life and career that ended too soon, yet still resonates today.
Stephen Von Mason has created more than a portrait; he has crafted a memory in oil and canvas. The painting does not just depict Aaliyah—it honors her. In doing so, it ensures that her light continues to shine, making her, as the title suggests, forever remembered.
