Anna Betbeze, Mike Cloud, Nicholas Galanin, Lotus L. Kang, Park McArthur, Lorraine O’Grady and Dyani White Hawk are among the 28 visual artists receiving 2024 Guggenheim Fellowships. Another 17 fellows are working as photographers.

The fellowships, administered by the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation, support specific projects in 52 different disciplines. This year’s cohort includes 188 fellows Students from the United States and Canada were selected from nearly 3,000 applicants. These scholarships provide financial support of approximately $30,000 to $60,000. Since the fellowship was established in 1925, the Guggenheim Foundation has awarded more than $400 million in grants to more than 19,000 fellows.

The fellowship is “a prestigious investment in the lives and careers of outstanding artists, scholars, scientists, writers and other cultural visionaries who are confronting these challenges and creating new possibilities and pathways in the broader culture” , Edward Hirsch, chairman of the foundation, said in a statement.

Projects supported by this year’s scholarship include photographer Sara Bennett documenting women’s lives after incarceration and photographer Ada Trillo documenting the experiences of LGBTQ+ immigrants arriving in the United States. For O’Grady, a pioneering performance and conceptual artist, the scholarship will help her revive old characters in new performance projects. Garanin, a Tlingit and Unangakos artist living in Alaska, will use the scholarship to support the development of new works and workshops that expand current discussions about Native contemporary art.

One of this year’s recipients is octogenarian painter Arvie Smith, whose scholarship is funded by actor Robert De Niro in memory of his father, the late painter Robert Sr. ‧Robert De Niro Sr., who became a Guggenheim Fellow in 1968.
