Jon Tsoi, an artist born in the culturally rich region of Sichuan, China, embarked on his artistic journey in 1979. Post the Cultural Revolution, Tsoi sought new horizons and moved to New York City, immersing himself in the contemporary art scene. His quest for understanding and expression led him to Montclair State University, where he refined his craft and honed his unique artistic perspective. Tsoi’s philosophy, “Non-visual art prescript spiritual and internal medicine to cure the disease of external and enslaved art senses,” encapsulates his approach to art. He believes that true art transcends mere visual appeal, resonating deeply within the soul.

Tsoi’s career spans over five decades, marked by more than 50 solo exhibitions and over 100 group showcases. His art, deeply rooted in introspection and spiritual exploration, has been displayed in galleries across the United States, including the Ethan Cohen Art Gallery and WhiteBox Art Space. These venues have provided a platform for his unconventional and thought-provoking work, inviting viewers to embark on a journey of self-discovery.

Tsoi’s art isn’t limited to traditional gallery spaces; it extends into the realm of performance art. One of his most performances, “Art Diagnosis and Diagnosis for Art,” took place at the Queens Museum in New York. This four-day blind performance delved into the depths of what Tsoi calls “inner spirit art,” blending intuition with creativity. His blind-inner spirit art performances have captivated audiences around the world, demonstrating his ability to push the boundaries of conventional art forms.

The WhiteBox Art Space has played a significant role in Tsoi’s career, showcasing his work for over three decades. In 2016, the founder and artistic director of WhiteBox Art Space traveled to Chongqing, China, to co-curate Tsoi’s first solo exhibition in his homeland after 37 years. This event was a monumental moment in Tsoi’s career, symbolizing a homecoming and a reconnection with his roots.

Jon Tsoi’s art is characterized by its introspective nature and its ability to challenge conventional aesthetics. His works, crafted through blind-inner spirit and subconscious inspiration, defy traditional boundaries and invite viewers to explore new dimensions of perception.

Throughout his career, Tsoi has remained dedicated to his philosophy of non-visual art. His belief in the spiritual and internal aspects of art has guided his creative process, resulting in a body of work that is both deeply personal and universally resonant. Tsoi’s art is a testament to the power of inner vision, demonstrating that true artistic expression comes from within and transcends external appearances.

In summary, Jon Tsoi’s journey as an artist is one of exploration, introspection, and innovation. From his beginnings in Sichuan, China, to New York City’s art scene, Tsoi’s performances and exhibitions challenge audiences to look beyond the visual and connect with the deeper, spiritual aspects of art.
